‘Idol,’ ‘Model,’ ‘SVU’ shine on Tuesday

A different net ruled each hour of primetime on Tuesday, with Fox’s “American Idol,” UPN’s “America’s Next Top Model” and NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” all delivering strong ratings, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

From 8 to 9, Fox’s “American Idol” rolled up more huge numbers (11.1/29 in adults 18-49, 26.3 million viewers overall), up a bit over last week and an amazing 20% improvement over its perf in the same hour a year ago. Drama “24” (4.6/11 in adults 18-49, 10.8 million viewers overall) was also up week-to-week but down vs. a year ago, winning its hour in 18-49.

UPN was competitive with the major nets with “America’s Next Top Model” (3.8/9 in adults 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall), which hit series highs and led its hour in adults 18-34 (4.3/12). Also in the hour, ABC’s “According to Jim” (4.2/11 in adults 18-49, 10.2 million viewers overall) easily won the 18-49 laffer battle at 9 opposite NBC’s “Frasier” (3.3/8 in adults 18-49, 10.3 million viewers overall), while it was closer at 9:30 when ABC’s “Less Than Perfect” (3.6/9 in adults 18-49, 9.1 million viewers overall) topped NBC’s “Scrubs” (4.2/11 in adults 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall).

In the 10 o’clock hour, NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” ruled (5.7/15 in adults 18-49, 14.5 million viewers overall), with ABC’s third night of “Super Millionaire” a solid second (4.4/12 in adults 18-49, 13.1 million viewers overall), improving on “NYPD Blue’s” average in the slot. The quizzer topped its broadcast competition in men 18-34 as well as teens and kids.

CBS was paced by “Navy NCIS” (2.8/7 in adults 18-49, 12.4 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 7.8/20; ABC, 3.7/10, tied with NBC, 3.7/10; CBS, 2.7/7; UPN, 2.6/6; WB, 1.9/5.

In total viewers: Fox, 18.6 million; CBS, 11.5 million; NBC, 10.2 million; ABC, 10.1 million; UPN, 5.5 million; WB, 4.6 million.
