‘Housewives’ hits new high

Morning Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

ABC’s hot new drama “Desperate Housewives” surged to another ratings high on Sunday opposite holiday movies on CBS and NBC, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, lifting the Alphabet to an easy victory on the night.

From 9 to 10, “Desperate Housewives” (12.4 rating/26 share in adults 18-49, 27 million viewers overall) rang up the best 18-49 score for any telecast this season, easily beating the combined deliveries of the other four broadcasters in the hour. ABC also scored big at 8 with “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (7.5/17 in adults 18-49, 18.2 million viewers overall) and was solid with “America’s Funniest Home Videos” kicking off the night (season-high 3.4/9 in adults 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall) and “Boston Legal” at 10 (season-high 5.9/14 in adults 18-49, 14 million viewers overall).

CBS ran second on the night, getting a nice assist from an NFL overrun as well as “60 Minutes” (roughly 4.2/10 in adults 18-49, 17.8 million viewers overall) and “Cold Case”

From 9 to 11, the Eye’s holiday movie “When Angels Come to Town” (roughly 3.4/8 in adults 18-49, 14.5 million viewers overall) topped NBC’s Kelsey Grammer-led musical “A Christmas Carol” (3/6 in adults 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall).

Fox’s premiere of theatrical “Ice Age” delivered a solid 3.4/8 in adults 18-49 and 9 million viewers overall from 7 to 9, but it was topped by NBC’s repeat of “Shrek” (3.8/9, 11.1 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 7.3/17; CBS, 4.1/9; NBC, 3.4/8; Fox, 3.2/7; WB, 1.1/2.

In total viewers: ABC, 17.8 million; CBS, 16.3 million; NBC, 10.3 million; Fox, 8.3 million; WB, 2.6 million.
