CNN drops German-lingo newscast

Slot couldn't compete in oversupplied market

COLOGNE — CNN has ended its 15-minute German-lingo news bulletin, which has aired in most German cable households since 1997.

Although Germans account for a quarter of viewers to CNN Intl., covering Europe, Africa and the Middle East, CNN said the slot could not compete in the oversupplied German-lingo news market.

CNN’s parent Time Warner also holds a 50% stake in Germany’s oldest news channel, N-TV. CNN does intend to increase its coverage of political and business news from Germany produced by its bureaus in Berlin and Frankfurt.
