Morning Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

CBS continued its strong November sweep Sunday with powerful results for the opening night of two-part disaster movie “Category 6: Day of Destruction,” while ABC won the night among young adults with the “American Music Awards,” according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

From 9 to 11, “Category 6” racked up the Eye’s best results for a movie since March 2002 (6.3/14 in adults 18-49, 19.4 million viewers overall), taking advantage of a night when ABC’s megahit drama “Desperate Housewives” did not air. CBS also excelled in the 8 o’clock hour with “Cold Case” establishing series highs (4.6/11 in adults 18-49, 18.2 million viewers overall).

At ABC, the three-hour “American Music Awards” (6.0/14 in adults 18-49, 13.8 million viewers overall) were up a bit vs. recent years, helping the Alphabet win the night in adults 18-49. Kicking off the night, a special repeat of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (3.4/9 in adults 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) was No. 2 in demos to football on Fox.

Fox benefited from an NFL overrun, boosting the ratings for 8 o’clock comedies “The Simpsons” (5.3/13 in adults 18-49, 11.5 million viewers overall) and “Arrested Development” (3.6/8 in adults 18-49, 7.5 million viewers overall). At 9, though, “My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss” (2.3/5 in adults 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) again struggled.

NBC saw season highs for “American Dreams” (3.1/7 in adults 18-49, 8.7 million viewers overall) and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (4.8/11 in adults 18-49, 15.2 million viewers overall), and “Crossing Jordan” remained solid at 10 (4.6/11 in adults 18-49, 13.9 million viewers overall) despite stepped-up competition.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 5.4/13; CBS, 5.1/12; Fox, 4.5/11; NBC, 3.7/9; WB, 1.1/3.

In total viewers: CBS, 18.0 million; ABC, 12.5 million; NBC, 11.3 million; Fox, 10.1 million; WB, 2.7 million
