PARIS — Canal Plus has bought Gallic video-on-demand outfit MovieSystem from its founders, which include Pathe and filmmaker Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp. Purchase price was not disclosed.
The group said MovieSystem is a leader in the development and exhibition of VOD services in France and several other European countries.
The acquisition will permit Canal Plus “to forcefully enter the market of video-on-demand and also reinforce the presence of Canal Plus in the sector of technology content and distribution,” the group said.
Canal said MovieSystem will deepen its relationship with French cinema, “which is at the heart of its activities and indivisibly linked to its brand.”
MovieSystem has a catalog of 1,500 films from more than 70 production companies as well as exclusive VOD deals with Pathe and EuropaCorp.
In France, the outfit provides VOD via high-speed Internet.
Canal Plus has created a development arm, headed by Xavier Marvaldi, former technical director of the group, to integrate the new business.
