Auds listen to ‘Plainsong’

CBS drew a healthy aud for its Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of “Plainsong,” teaming with another strong showing by rookie drama “Cold Case” to lift the Eye to the largest audience for any network Sunday night, according to preliminary nationals from Nielsen.

Although CBS ran fourth for the night in adults 18-49, it was in a virtual tie for the 25-54 lead thanks to “Plainsong” (3.0/8 in adults 18-49, 15.5 million viewers overall) and “Cold Case” (3.0/8 in adults 18-49, 14.3 million viewers overall). “Cold Case” again built nicely on its lead-in from “60 Minutes” (1.9/6 in adults 18-49, 10.9 million viewers overall) and dominated its hour in total viewers.

ABC led the night in adults 18-49 with strong showings by “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (first-place 2.7/9 in adults 18-49, 8.3 million viewers overall) and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (4.1/11 in adults 18-49, 10.0 million viewers overall), which has emerged as a hit for the Alphabet in the second half of the season. Net was also solid with “Alias” (3.8/9 in adults 18-49, 8.6 million viewers overall) and “The Practice” (3.5/9 in adults 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall).

NBC led the broadcast webs from 9 to 11, receiving similar scores from a repeat “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (4.1/10 in adults 18-49, 12.0 million viewers overall) and an original “Crossing Jordan” (4.1/11 in adults 18-49, 11.6 million viewers overall).

Fox was led as usual by an hour of “The Simpsons” (an original and repeat) that averaged a slot-leading 4.3/12 in adults 18-49 and 9.3 million viewers overall. In the 9 o’clock hour, “Malcolm in the Middle” notched a 3.1/8 in adults 18-49 and 7.3 million viewers overall, and the season finale of “Arrested Development” averaged a 2.5/6 in the demo and 5.9 million viewers.

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 3.5/10; NBC, 3.2/9, tied with Fox, 3.2/9; CBS, 2.8/8; WB, 1.1/3.

In total viewers: CBS, 14.0 million; NBC, 9.8 million; ABC, 8.9 million; Fox, 7.2 million; WB, 2.3 million.
