TV stars pay the ‘Rent’

Tuner throws bash for eighth anni

How do you fill a Broadway theater with screaming teenage girls? Just pack in the gay TV stars.

“Rent” celebrated its eighth anniversary at the Nederlander Monday night, but if you didn’t know better, you might think it was a celebration for “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.”

Onstage, “Queer Eye” culture guy Jai Rodriguez and “American Idol” star Frenchie Davis drew major applause, while ex-Spice Girl Melanie Brown may have suffered for fame launched in the last century.

At the Club Therapy afterparty, producer Jeffrey Seller had his own explanation for “Rent’s” long-running appeal, referencing late creator Jonathan Larson, who used to lament the lack of shows that spoke to his life. “The key thing with this show is that these are our stories, our characters and our music,” he said.

Also paying his respects was original “Rent” star Anthony Rapp.
