SYDNEY – Will Smith might have nixed Aussie helmer Alex Proyas’ plan to lense “I, Robot” at Sydney’s Fox Studios but he did his best to make amends at the pic’s Oz preem at the site June 19.
Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff performed a 15-minute set for fans flanking the red carpet. Crowd was smaller than expected due to heavy rain in drought-stricken New South Wales.
But Fox’s Australian distribution chief Sunder Kimatrai was upbeat. “We’ve broken the drought and got this weekend’s No. 1 movie in the States,” he said.
Preem was a homecoming celebration for Proyas, whose office is a stone’s throw away.
Thesp urged Proyas to lense “I, Robot” in Vancouver because wife Jada had just finished working on “The Matrix” sequels in Oz and “we were concerned with the commute,” Smith explained.
