SCHEVENINGEN — Billionaire philanthropist and Dutch media mogul Joop van den Ende and art patron and spouse Janine van den Ende kicked off the Dutch premiere of “The Lion King” April 4 in this seaside resort with the gala openingApril 3 of “Identity,” an exhibit of some 100 works of modern art from South Africa.
Some 40 South African artists also flew in for the occasion — which coincided with the 10-year anniversary of apartheid’s demise — as did a roster of theatrical toppers from three continents. Among them: Disney Theatrical Productions’ Thomas Schumacher, “The Lion King” director Julie Taymor, composer and choral director Lebo Morake and choreographer Garth Fagan.
Joop van den Ende said he intends to continue Stageholding’s tradition of supporting art shows at the five-stage complex he is renovating in New York.
“Identity” graces the upper and lower galleries of the 100-year old Fortis Circus Theater.
