Law gives ‘Hunter’ a hand

Thesp lays down a classic

LONDON — Jude Law introduced Grand Classics’ July 5 screening of his favorite film, Charles Laughton’s “The Night of the Hunter,” by joking, “My friend Johnny Lee Miller came here expecting that Sly Stallone classic ‘Nighthawks,’ so he may be a little disappointed.”

Law told the Notting Hill aud he taped “Night” from TV as a precocious 12-year-old and, “Being the pretentious little twat that I was, I tried to get my mates to watch it with me the next day.”

Unfortunately for Law, his pals were “more interested in riding their BMX bikes than watching a black-and-white movie about a deranged preacher.”

The series, an offshoot of a Gotham program started in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, launched in London last June when director Anthony Minghella introduced the Fellini film “I Vitelloni.” Jim Broadbent subsequently presented “The Palm Beach Story” and most recently, Bob Hoskins did the honors with “Rififi.”
