HOLLYWOOD — Jean-Pierre Jeunet needed no help from his interpreter following Tuesday’s Variety screening of “A Very Long Engagement.” During the Q&A, the French helmer and co-scribe showed, if anything, a disarming command of American slang.
When asked why he didn’t lens key scenes of his World War I love story in the snow, as Sebastien Japrisot‘s novel dictated, Jeunet replied, “If you shoot in the snow, you are in the deep shit.”
Jeunet peppered the sesh with bon mots about casting — he said he asked star Audrey Tautou, after shooting both “Amelie” and “Engagement,” if she knew the meaning of the word “trilogy” — while poking fun at Jodie Foster‘s cameo in the special-effects-laden pic.
“It’s a fake Jodie Foster,” he said. “She is CGI.”
