Indian thesp Jonnalagadda Venkata Somayajulu died of cardiac arrest April 27 in Hyderabad, southern India. He was 76.

Somayajulu starred in nearly 150 films in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada, but his most famous role was his debut pic as the teacher of classical Indian music in 1979’s “Shankarabharanam.”

He had previously been a stage actor in plays such as “Kanyasulkam,” “Keertiseshulu” and “NGO.”

His other notable film credits were in “Thyagaraja,” “Vamsa Vriksha” and last year’s “Kabirdas.”

He won the National Award for his role in “Shankarabharanam.”
