Cofounder of Jujamcyn Theaters

James H. Binger, chairman and cofounder of Jujamcyn Theaters, died Thursday at his home in Minneapolis, Minn. He was 88.

The Jujamcyn org owns and operates five Broadway theaters, the St. James, Al Hirschfeld, Eugene O’Neill the Walter Kerr and the Virginia, which was named in honor of Binger’s wife, Virginia, who died in 2002. The Bingers started their legit operation in the 1970s and called it Jujamcyn, which derives from their children’s first names: Judith, James and Cynthia.

He was also on the board of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.

Binger worked at Honeywell, Inc. from 1961 to 1978, ending his career there as CEO. He entered the theater business in the 1970s when his father-in-law, former 3M chairman William L. McKnight, gave him three theaters to try and restore to profitability.

He is survived by a son, a daughter, four grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
