Comic Relief VP

Dennis Albaugh, vice president of Comic Relief, died Dec. 10 in Los Angeles after battling pancreatic cancer for two years. He was 63.

Albaugh joined Comic Relief in 1986, working to develop new ways of raising funding and awareness for the homeless in America. That year the first live show, hosted by comedians Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams, aired on HBO. Seven other Comic Relief telecasts followed; the charity has raised and distributed $50 million to date.

Albaugh grew up in Monrovia and worked his way through UC Riverside by moonlighting as a semi-pro bowler.

He worked as an activist in Northern California before returning to Los Angeles, where he was VP of the planning division at United Way of Greater Los Angeles. There, he developed projects to fight poverty and hunger in Los Angeles.

He was also a founding board member of Shelter Partnership and Homeless Health Care Los Angeles. In 2003, Albaugh re-ceived the Tom Bradley Lifetime Achievement Award for Shelter Partnership.

Albaugh is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter; a sister; and a brother.
