Heady ‘Times’ in Intl. Emmy noms

Noms 'Times' 3 for DRTV

See Nominees

CANNES — Denmark’s DRTV has a chance to complete a hat trick, with its drama “Better Times” receiving its third nomination in a row in the drama category of the Intl. Emmy Awards.

It’s the first time a non-U.K. broadcaster has received a trio of noms in one category. Nominations were announced Monday at Mipcom.

Others up for drama are Germany’s “Schimanski” and the U.K.’s “Shameless” and “Waking the Dead.”

By region, Latin America stepped up to the plate, with shows from Argentina, Chile and Mexico all receiving nominations. Argentina’s “Caiga quien caiga” broke the record for nominations to a single show with five, including one for nonscripted entertainment; show satirizes politics and celebrity.

The United Kingdom received three of the four nominations in the TV movie/miniseries category, with Granada’s “The Deal” and “Henry VIII,” BBC’s “Canterbury Tales” and France’s “L’Affaire Dominici,” from TF1, all getting noms.

South Africa again

South Africa received its second nom in the history of the awards, for comedy “Stokvel — Secret Pals.”

Others up for the comedy trophy are Germany’s “Berlin, Berlin — Sven Oder Alex” and Canada’s “Corner Gas” and “The Newsroom — Anchors Away.”

The Intl. Emmy Directorate Award will be given to Herbert Kloiber, managing director of the Tele Munchen Group.

Vet Oz Channel Nine broadcaster Len Mauger will receive the Ted Cott Award for his dedication to the Intl. Emmy Academy.

MTV Intl. prexy Bill Roedy will be honored with the Intl. Emmy Founders Award, including a citation for airing educational programming on the global AIDS crisis.

Graham Norton hosts the Intl. Emmys ceremony, to be held Nov. 22 in Gotham.

    Review: 'O.G.' on HBO

Jeffrey Wright, the most compelling reason to watch HBO’s new film “O.G.,” is among television’s best actors at switching between codes or manners of being. On “Westworld,” his timeline-toggling android swaps personae so delicately that his performance gains in resonance when recalled in retrospect. (Perhaps that’s why Wright has been so oddly underrated through the [...]
