FX paints project Black

Cabler orders pilot presentation of 'Channel'

Jack Black and FX are teaming up on a comedic reality competition that pits aspiring TV producers against each other as the multihyphenate critiques their efforts before a crowd.

Cabler has ordered a pilot presentation of the one-hour project “Channel 101,” a spinoff of Black’s monthly showcase at Hollywood venue Cinespace.

Like the live show, series will give a handful of amateurs one week to create a five-minute pilot using their own materials. The piece will then be screened before an audience.

Black and Jeff Davis will set up each project and reconvene for some colorful and sure-to-be-blunt commentary with the show’s creative team.

Audiences will vote for their favorites, who will then cut second episodes to go up against a set of new pilots the next week. Goal is to go the longest without getting “canceled.”

Black will exec produce alongside Dan Harmon, Rob Schrab and Kanpai Pictures’ Jay Karas and Andee Kuroda. “Channel 101” reunites Harmon and Schrab, who created the Fox pilot “Heat Vision and Jack,” which was directed by Ben Stiller and starred Black and Owen Wilson.

Judging from past competitions, Harmon said that “there is no way any of this stuff would be on the networks. It’s all very dark and crazy and twisted.”

And just as in the real world of network television, Harmon said not all of the projects are good.

“If their ego needs some bashing, this is the place it’ll happen. The people who stick around will have skin as tough as nails when it’s over,” he said. “The secret in this business is to just keep working and not take yourself too seriously.”

UTA-repped Black voices the Lenny character in DreamWorks’ animated feature “Shark Tale,” opening in October.

Karas and Kuroda exec produced MTV’s “The Osbournes Family Christmas Special” as well as several kudocasts for the music net and sister channel VH1.
