WB heats up ‘Summer’ for a second season

13 episodes ordered, skein to return during 2004-05 season.

It’s an endless “Summerland” for the WB, which has picked up a second season of the surprise hit drama.

Frog ordered 13 episodes of the Spelling TV series, which will return at some point during the 2004-05 season.

Incoming WB Entertainment prexy David Janollari will officially announce the pickup as it meets with reporters today as part of the TV critics press tour. Janollari said the show reps “a very important scheduling piece for us at midseason.”

“For us, it’s the right show at the right time, and to give my first pickup order to Aaron Spelling, who has meant so much to the television business and to the WB specifically, is a thrill in itself,” he said.

“Summerland,” which stars Lori Loughlin, has become the top-rated original drama this summer with teens (2.7 rating/9 share) and has consistently dominated its Tuesday night timeslot in that demo. “Summerland” is also second in its slot with women 12-34 (3.0/9) and third with persons 12-34 (1.9/6).

Remi Aubuchon and Stephen Tolkin exec produce the show alongside Spelling and E. Duke Vincent. Loughlin plays Ava Gregory, a thirtysomething fashionista who bands with her friends to raise her sister’s kids when their parents are killed.
