Tennis serves up win for ‘Letterman’

Wimbledon recaps push Leno into second place

Thanks to NBC’s coverage of Wimbledon, CBS latenight host David Letterman beat Peacock competitor Jay Leno for the first time in two years across key categories.

Throughout the week of June 28, a nightly Wimbledon recap delayed the start of Leno’s show by 15 minutes — and 30 minutes on Friday night — giving Letterman a crucial advantage. Because of Wimbledon, “Leno” was in repeats, while “Letterman” was in firstruns.

According to Nielsen Media Research, “Late Show With David Letterman” averaged 4.6 million total viewers for the week, while “The Tonight With Jay Leno” aud plunged to 3.5 million.

“Letterman” also won the key demo, posting a 1.7 rating in adults 18-49; “Leno” drew a 1.3.

Results marked the latter show’s lowest ratings in total aud and adults 18-49 since the advent of People Meters. “Leno” did beat “Letterman” in adults 18-34 (1.3 vs. 1.2).

Season to date, “Leno” continues to maintain a substantial lead over “Letterman,” averaging 6 million viewers and a 2.3 rating in adults 18-49. “Letterman” has averaged 4.3 million viewers and a 1.6.

Despite the Wimbledon delays, encore performances of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” continued to beat CBS’ “Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn,” averaging 1.9 million viewers and a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49.

Kilborn, who was in firstrun episodes, averaged 1.7 million viewers and a 0.7.
