Syndie ratings spike

Talkshows, court shows, magazines get a boost

NEW YORK — Several syndie shows jumped in their national ratings after a depressed Easter holiday week.

Talkshows, court shows, magazines and the top gamers all saw increases during the period of April 12-18.

“Oprah Winfrey” and protege “Dr. Phil” were both up by double digits. “Oprah” saw a 6.9 rating, up 19% for the week and 38% year to year.

“Dr. Phil” was up 16% to a 5.1 rating and 13% vs. last year, giving Oprah’s offshoot his highest rating in six weeks.

In the courtroom, all seven shows heated up.

“Divorce Court,” which has been the No. 3 courtshow every week this season, had to contend more for viewers. Its 2.4 rating, up 4% for the week, was down 14% vs. last year. “Judge Greg Mathis” also came in at a 2.4, up 9% for the week and 26% from last year, making it the courtshow with the most year-to-year growth. “People’s Court” also tied for third with a 2.4, up 14% for both the week and year.

‘Judy’ still on top

“Judge Judy” held the No. 1 courtshow spot at 4.9, up 7% on the week and 9% on last year. “Judge Joe Brown” was second with a 3.5 rating, up 6% week to week and year to year.

Also showing syndie strength were the top gameshows.

“Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” at No. 3 was up 16% to a 13.7 rating and up 28% from last year, making it the sharpest weekly and yearly increase over last year.

“Wheel of Fortune” (8.6) and “Jeopardy” (7.1) finished on top, both up week-to-week.

Proving not so savvy, “Street Smarts” hit a new low for the season this week (0.8), down 38% from last year. It was the only strip in syndie to hit a new low.

Top mags also showed strength, with “Entertainment Tonight” (5.2, up 11%) followed by “Inside Edition” (3.4, up 10%) and “Access Hollywood” (2.9, up 7%).
