Sparks net flies o’seas

All six co.'s get options to 200 titles in shared catalog

Scandinavian format exchange Sparks Network has signed six TV production outfits to its new format exchange network.

Members include Promofilm, which has offices in the U.S. and Latin America, the U.K.’s Princess Prods., Poland’s ATM Grupa, Spain’s GloboMedia, Denmark’s STV, and Sweden’s Titan Media. All get exclusive options on the 200 titles in the shared catalog.

“It’s like an output deal,” Sparks Network’s managing director Frederik af Malmborg noted. He said the network “chooses one independent in each territory” as its member and has companies in five other territories under consideration for membership.

Sparks was launched in September by former managing director of Nordisk Film & TV in Sweden Nicola Soderlund. Soderlund estimates that the Sparks members have combined revenue of E300 million ($372 million).

“If you are an independent TV production company, it is quite tough to be on your own in your home market,” af Malmborg said. “You are surrounded by competitors and squeezed by broadcasters, but it often is these companies that are very creative.”
