Journo Bernsen ankles KTTV

Reporter, station couldn't come to terms on reassignment

Vet KTTV reporter Rod Bernsen has ankled the Fox-owned Los Angeles station after 12 years.

Bernsen, who until recently reported from the station’s “Sky Fox 11” helicopter, is probably best-known as the station’s go-to guy for breaking police and fire news. The reporter frequently provided analysis by phone from home during coverage of car chases.

The reporter more recently had been reassigned to general-assignment reporting after back surgery forced him to give up the Sky Fox gig. Bernsen and KTTV ultimately couldn’t come to terms on how he should be reassigned.

“There are enough people whose opinion I respect that believe what I do is unique and valuable,” Bernsen said. “I wasn’t seeing the necessary appreciation.”

A retired Los Angeles Police Dept. sergeant, Bernsen joined KTTV in April 1992. He took over the helicopter beat for Fox 11 Morning News and “Good Day L.A.” in 1998. Bernsen scored a local Emmy Award in 1999 for the KTTV special “A Peacekeeper’s Mission,” which he shot in Bosnia.

Bernsen said he’s exploring new options, including traveling to New York to speak with the national cable news nets.
