Inside Move: Fuse burning for Weiss

Cabler expected to remain with Cablevision

Music cabler Fuse is expected to announce the promotion of programming chief Robert Weiss to general manager/head of entertainment by the end of the year.

He will report to Rainbow distribution/sports networks prexy Andrea Greenberg. Fuse, however, is expected to remain with Cablevision, which is in the process of spinning off Rainbow Media Enterprises into a separately held subsidiary.

News arrives three months after former Fuse prexy Marc Juris ankled to take the G.M. job at Court TV (Daily Variety, Aug. 20). A Fuse spokeswoman said no appointments have yet been named.

Weiss, a former VH1 programming and development veep, joined Fuse as head of programming just seven months ago, charged with overseeing creative content and program strategy. Since then, he’s rapidly ramped up the cabler’s number of original series and launched the latenight block After Party.

Having rebranded as Fuse less than two years ago and targeting viewers ages 12-34, the network formerly known as MuchMusic has ably positioned itself as the anti-MTV with a sharp focus on music programming. Net is available in more than 34 million homes.

Weiss will continue to oversee programming and the channel’s day-to-day operations. Among other areas, he will be responsible for marketing, talent relations, on-air promotions, production, program scheduling, acquisitions, music strategic planning and media relations.

At VH1, Weiss oversaw East Coast development, working on shows “True Spin,” “One-Hit Wonders,” “VH1 Goes Inside” and “Surviving Nugent.” He also helped reconceive the channel’s “The Greatest” franchise.

Before that, he was an exec consultant at FX and, earlier, a senior veep of alternative programming at All American Television.
