News channel taps CNBC, NPR correspondents

HONG KONG — CNN Intl. has appointed several correspondents to boost its broadcast and newsgathering operations.

Martin Soong becomes anchor-correspondent for CNN Intl. in the Asia Pacific region on April 1. Soong, formerly a news editor and anchor with CNBC Asia, will join CNN’s regional presenting team in Hong Kong.

In the Middle East, Guy Raz, formerly with NPR’s London bureau, becomes CNN Jerusalem correspondent. Also in the region, Atlanta-based Octavia Nasr, who has been with the network for 14 years, becomes CNN’s senior editor for Arab affairs.

CNN has hired three new video correspondents: Atlanta-based Alphonso Van Marsh has worked as a journalist in more than 20 nations and was previously a writer, producer and correspondent for CNN Intl.; Ryan Chilcote, based in Moscow, was previously a producer for the network; Karl Penhaul, based in Bogota, Columbia, was a CNN freelance contributor and formerly a correspondent for Reuters news agency.

The news network is now using its Digital Newsgathering system. DNG, which combines lightweight cameras and advanced satellite and Internet communications technology in a lightweight laptop, was developed by CNN’s New Delhi bureau and expanded and tweaked by CNN engineers in Atlanta.

The system will now be used by all 28 international bureaus. Company says DNG is a platform for editing, compression, transmission and live shots and will enhance the correspondents’ ability to respond quickly to breaking news.
