Familiar faces help Wolf lay down ‘Law’

Rydell to handle prod'n issues, Green heads scribes

Feature director Mark Rydell (“On Golden Pond”) has joined Dick Wolf’s upcoming “Law & Order: Trial by Jury” as the show’s executive producer, alongside “L&O” vet Walon Green.

Rydell will be based in New York and handle production issues such as casting and securing directors, while Green — who divides his time between Gotham and Los Angeles — heads the writing team.

Wolf said he was drawn to Rydell’s “extensive theatrical film and television experience” in recruiting the vet for the job. Green, meanwhile, showran “Law & Order” for two years and also partnered with Wolf on “Dragnet.”

Rydell, who’s moving East for the job, said he expects a challenge in trying to maintain the hallmarks of the “Law & Order” brand while trying to break new ground.

“The whole trick is how to improve it without changing the essential elements of the show,” Rydell said. “I have a reputation for being good with actors, and we’ll see if I can give a little emotion to a show that has so far been more about the process.”

The NBC Universal skein starts shooting in New York on Oct. 4 and will premiere on the Peacock sometime in midseason. The courtroom drama stars Jerry Orbach, continuing his role as Lenny Brisco, along with Carey Lowell and others to be announced. Candice Bergen and John Mahoney are also set for recurring roles (Daily Variety, June 4).

Rydell’s credits also include “The Rose” and “James Dean,” as well as producing “The Cowboys.” He also earned an Oscar original screenplay nom for “The Wild Bunch,” and scored Emmy and Peabody statuettes for producing “National Geographic” specials.
