Norwegian co. shutters after heavy losses

Norwegian media group Dinamo Norge will close cash-strapped film production company Dinamo Story.

However, its planned $10 million screen adaptation of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House,” to be directed by Liv Ullmann and topline Kate Winslet, will go ahead with alternative financing, producer Petter Borgli said. Borgli has started to repackage the production.

Dinamo Norge topper Bjarne Wollmann said the division was too costly and a strain on liquidity, but television production will continue at Dinamo Story TV I.

Launched in 2001, the production company showed a pretax loss of $450,000 in 2003 after backing just four films.

The most high-profile pic, Petter Moland’s $7 million “The Beautiful Country” — originally a U.S. project for helmer Terrence Malick — was selected for competition at the Berlin Film Festival but disappointed at local wickets.

“Train in a Bottle,” helmer Martin Asphaug’s return to Norwegian filmmaking after working in Sweden for several years, has yet to be released.
