Cho inks with ABC, Touchstone

Comic signs on for half-hour laffer

Standup comedian Henry Cho has sealed a deal with ABC and Touchstone to star in a sitcom based on his own life.

Cho’s standup routine frequently revolves around his experiences as a Korean-American born and raised in Tennessee. Pilot, which will be written by Matt Goldman (“Ellen,” “Luis”), will center on Cho’s status as a Southerner who still sometimes feels like an outsider in the South.

Goldman will exec produce, along with David Janollari.

Cho, who recently hit the road with country stars Amy Grant and Vince Gill, hosted NBC’s “Friday Night Videos” and performed several times on “The Tonight Show.” His credits also include the films “Say It Isn’t So” and “McHale’s Navy.”

“You’re always looking for people with different points of view,” Touchstone TV prexy Steve McPherson said. “It’s not so much about diversity as it is voice. It’s just a strong, comedic point of view.”

Cho is repped by Alex Murray and Bob Lange; Goldman by BWCS.
