China gets its MTV

Alliance was unveiled in March

The Viacom-Shanghai Media Group production co-venture in China will begin operating early next year, airing locally produced live-action series, gameshows and the animated “Nick Hours” on more than 30 cable channels across the nation.

The alliance, the first involving a global media company to be approved by the Chinese government, was unveiled in March by Viacom chairman-CEO Sumner Redstone (Daily Variety, March 25).

Viacom was the first Western conglom to take advantage of the change in regs last December that permitted foreign media groups to own minority stakes in Chinese production ventures.

The Shanghai-based Viacom-SMG entity now is looking for office space and recruiting staff.

The third annual MTV Style Awards, to be held Sunday at the Shanghai Oriental TV Studio, is a co-prod between MTV China, SMG and CCTV 6, and will be broadcast in more than 300 million homes.
