Leave it to Bill Murray to bring laughs with the loving at Tuesday night’s MOMA Work in Progress tribute to Sofia Coppola.
Playfully ribbing Coppola for having earned props after helming two features, he joked, “I’ve been urging MOMA to do this for some time.”
Among those praising the soft-spoken helmer were “Virgin Suicides” Kirsten Dunst and indie stalwart Jim Jarmusch.
Latter queried how she was handling the attention heaped upon her from “Lost in Translation.” “Is it cool with you?” he quizzed. “I want to draw a shamanistic circle that protects your imagination.”
Guests quaffed mini cans of Sofia champagne, courtesy of Niebaum Coppola vineyards, at the Gramercy Theater tribute. The crowd included Coppola’s mother, Eleanor, Kathleen Turner, Claire Danes and last year’s honoree, Alexander Payne. Kyra Sedgwick, Mira Nair and Kevin Bacon were among the guests who attended the party at Metronome.
