Sundance short take

Docu helmer Andrew Jarecki calls his short “Just a Clown” the “insane companion piece” to his 2003 Sundance docu grand jury prize winner, “Capturing the Friedmans.” The short’s subject, Gotham’s most popular birthday party clown, was the one he initially set out to document before he uncovered the Friedmans’ family morass. “It should be fascinating for those that saw the feature to see the thing that led to the film,” says Jarecki. The 20-minute short was created for the “Friedmans” DVD release and was culled from previously shot material. Jarecki says the film is funny and complicated, just like its protagonist, David Friedman.
