Nine acts break borders

European acts with the highest debut album sales in 2003 received Border Breakers awards Sunday. Prizes were rewards for highest sales figures in the 15 EU states not including the country of origin. Among the nine winners were the Darkness’ “Permission to Land” (U.K.), the Thrills’ “So Much for the City” (Ireland), Carla Bruni’s “Quelqu’un m’a dit” (France) and Mariza’s “Fado Em Mim” (Portugal). The awards were part of the Culture 2000 program that promotes the exporting of European music.
