The Darkness tops Brit Award noms

Glam rockers are up for four gongs

LONDON — Signs of life in the U.K. music scene were on display Monday night in London as the nominations for the 2004 Brit Awards, the U.K.’s top music honors, were announced.

Light-hearted glam rockers the Darkness, whose debut album “Permission to Land” has gone platinum in the U.K. and recently began rocketing up the U.S. charts, are up for four gongs: British group, album, breakthrough and rock act.

After shifting 8 million units of her sophomore effort, “Life for Rent,” singer Dido nabbed three noms; British female solo artist, album and single.

The raucous tone of the evening was amplified by live numbers from nominees Goldfrapp, up for British dance act, and five-time chart-toppers Busted, up for British group and breakthrough.

The noms are awash with a mix of veterans and fresh faces. Annie Lennox, David Bowie, Radiohead and Blur are some of the familiar names mixed in with the likes of “Pop Idol” alumnus Will Young (British male solo artist), Mercury Prize-winning urban act Dizzee Rascal (breakthrough) and singer Jamelia (British female solo artist, single).

Dido, the Darkness, Muse and Busted will perform on the Feb. 17 awards show, along with ’80s icons Duran Duran, lauded for their “outstanding contribution to music.”

The Brits also honor international acts: Top American stars Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and White Stripes will compete for kudos. Stateside acts set to perform at the awards show, to be broadcast live in the U.K. on ITV1, include Black Eyed Peas and 50 Cent.
