MIAMI — Millions of Americans tune in to “American Idol.” Telemundo is betting the country’s Spanish speakers will be similarly hooked with “Nuevas voces de America” (New Voices of America).
Emilio Estefan and his Estefan Television Prods. will produce the singing competish for Telemundo. The partners kicked off auditions for the upcoming show in New York City on Saturday. Tryouts will be held in Puerto Rico, Miami and Los Angeles later this month, and the show is accepting audition tapes.
The 20 finalists are scheduled to be announced in early December. They will live in Miami Beach for several months for coaching and “image transformations” to get ready for the weekly program.
“Voces” is expected to bow on NBC-owned Telemundo in February.
The final winner of “Nuevas Voces de America” will receive a recording contract with a major label.
