Jay-Z raps up six MTV video noms

Beyonce, OutKast, No Doubt follow with 5 nods

See Nominees

Jay-Z had reason to celebrate his “99 Problems” Tuesday after nabbing half a dozen MTV Video Music Award nominations.

MTV’s 21st annual kudocast, skedded for Aug. 29 at Miami’s American Airlines Arena, will feature performances from Usher, Kayne West, Jessica Simpson, Hoobastank, Yellowcard and Jet.

Jay-Z — who will be contending for video of the year, male video, rap video, direction in a video, editing in a video and cinematography in a video — was followed closely by Beyonce Knowles, OutKast (“Hey Ya”) and No Doubt (“It’s My Life”), which each drew five noms.

Knowles’ “Naughty Girl” garnered mentions for female video, dance video, choreography and cinematography while “Me, Myself and I” reaped one for R&B video.

OutKast’s “Hey Ya” grabbed noms for video, hip-hop video, direction, special effects and art direction.

Other artists making waves this year are D12 (“My Band”), Steriogram (“Walkie Talkie Man”) and Black-Eyed Peas (“Hey Mama”), garnering three noms apiece.

Relative newcomer Kayne West received four — two for “All Falls Down,” featuring Syleena Johnson, and two for his perf in Brandy’s “Talk About Our Love.”

Nominees were chosen by approximately 500 viewers and record label reps, music journalists and musicvid producers.

New this year is the selection of the viewers’ choice honoree through the VMAyhem Viewers’ Choice Playoffs, in which voters will vote from among 40 different video matchups via MTV.com until five remain. Viewers then will choose from the five on the MTV Web site up until moments before the winner is announced.

The MTV2 Award also will be chosen by visitors to the cabler’s site.

Voting for these categories began Tuesday, and voting for the final five nominees in the VMAyhem Viewers’ Choice Playoffs begins Aug. 18.

Though the awards have been held only in Los Angeles and Gotham in the past 20 years, net announced the Miami choice in late April.

And the nominees are…
