Somlyo’s in tony job for Drama Desk nods

Awards to be presented in a TheaterMania Webcast

Jumping ship, Roy A. Somlyo has been named executive consultant to the Drama Desk Awards.

For the past five years, the producer was president and CEO of the American Theater Wing, which is co-presenter of the Tony Awards with the League of American Theaters and Producers. Somlyo resigned from the Wing last year.

The Drama Desk Awards will be presented May 16 at the LaGuardia Concert Hall. The Tonys are skedded for June 6 at Radio City Music Hall.

The Drama Desk Awards had been televised on NY-1, but lost that outlet last year. For the second consecutive year, TheaterMania will do a Webcast of the event. According to Somlyo, NYC-TV and channel 36 in Los Angeles will present a delayed airing of the program this year. The Drama Desk show has also been offered to all PBS outlets.

Nominations for the 2003-04 Drama Desk Awards will be announced April 29 at the New York Friars Club. William Wolf is president of the Drama Desk. Robert R. Blume is executive producer of the org’s awards ceremony.
