The producers of the current “Fiddler on the Roof” revival have confirmed that Harvey Fierstein will be their new Tevye. His start date is being negotiated, but it is expected that there will be a seamless January transfer from the show’s current star, Alfred Molina, to Fierstein.
Separately, over the weekend, August Wilson told observers at the Chicago Humanities Festival that San Francisco-based producer Carole Shorenstein Hays (“Take Me Out,” “Caroline, or Change”) was the angel ready to save his “Gem of the Ocean” production.
The play had been announced to open Nov. 11 on Broadway. That date had to be scuttled when an investor got cold feet last month and pulled about $1 million from the $2.3 million capitalization.
A spokesman for the show did not confirm Shorenstein Hays’ participation. The producer could not be reached for comment.
