Drama Desk gets ‘Wicked’

'Jumpers' shut out of noms

See Nominees

The Drama Desk shared its theater awards nominations among Broadway and Off Broadway shows both long shuttered and just opened: “Wicked” was the clear leader, with 11, followed closely by Lincoln Center Theater’s “Henry IV,” with eight.

Also racking up lots of noms were “Assassins” with seven — its director, Joe Mantello, is up against himself for direction of a musical, as he also helmed “Wicked” — and, with six apiece, “Caroline, or Change” and “Wonderful Town.”

Shuttered Off Broadway shows “The Musical of Musicals: The Musical” and “Ramayana 2K3” took home five nods apiece.

Among the 100-plus noms for excellence in New York theater, announced Thursday by Mary-Louise Parker and Tony Roberts at Gotham’s Friars Club, there were some notable omissions and surprise inclusions.

“Jumpers” was shut out. The Pulitzer Prize-winning “I Am My Own Wife” was the only Broadway play to be nominated in the best play category. The “Assassins” ensemble was limited to one nom, Marc Kudisch as featured actor in a musical.

However, long-shuttered tuner “Big River” snagged four noms, including one for revival of a musical. And Boy George was nominated for both music and lyrics on tuner “Taboo.”

Awards will be presented May 16 at the LaGuardia Concert Hall.
