Detour along B’way ‘Avenue’

Co-songwriter sez Bush line will stay in production's song

Showbizzers will be sorting out the impact of the 2004 election for months, but Broadway’s “Avenue Q” has already come to that bridge and crossed over it.

Toward the end of the final song “For Now,” the characters sing, “Sex is only for now / Your hair is only for now / George Bush is only for now.”

Co-songwriter Robert Lopez had plan B ready if the election had gone John Kerry‘s way. Lopez says the line probably would have been changed to “George Bush was only for now” beginning with the Nov. 3 perf, and would have been completely rethought by Kerry’s inauguration day.

Now that Bush has won four more years, isn’t the line a bit confusing?

It normally gets huge laughsand cheers, but the night after Bush’s victory speech it got only some chuckles and a smattering of claps. An usher confirmed the reaction was well below average.

Co-songwriter Jeff Marx says the line will stay.

So what happens to the line four years from now?

“It’s yet to be decided,” Marx said.
