B.O. bounces up 6.8%

Broadway grosses

After a huge drop over Halloween week, Broadway grosses recovered 6.8% to $11,861,299 during Week 23 (Nov. 1-7), with attendance up 3.4% to 182,759.

The jump came despite the fact that the end of daylight savings time, which came in the early morning of Oct. 31, traditionally pulls the following week’s grosses downward.

But the $759,093 rise can be attributed mainly to the arrival of three new shows. Michael Frayn’s new play “Democracy” ($273,582) debuted with five previews and 92.1% attendance at the Brooks Atkinson. “Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance” ($184,728) and Whoopi Goldberg’s “Whoopi” ($103,878) each began with four previews.

Still, only five shows saw grosses decrease. “Dracula” suffered the most, dropping $46,613 to $255,043. Biggest gainers were “Wonderful Town” (up $95,656 to $478,788), “The Lion King” (up $67,177 to $1,104,279) and “Rent” (up $53,328 to $303,311).

The 18 musicals grossed $10,246,013 for 86.4% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 151,025 at 72.7% of capacity.

The nine plays grossed $1,615,286 for 13.6% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 31,734 at 65.6% of capacity.

Average ticket prices were $67.84 for musicals, $50.90 for plays, and $64.90 for all shows.
