The new musical “Altar Boyz” opens Off Broadway Feb. 27 at Dodger Stages, with previews starting Feb. 15.
The tuner previewed earlier this season at the New York Musical Theater Festival. As auds there learned, it’s not easy being the member of a Christian boy band that offers such instant classics as “Girl, You Make Me Wanna Wait” and “Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone.”
Creatives on the project are songwriters Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, book writer Kevin Del Aguila, director Stafford Arima, choreographer Christopher Gattelli and music director Lynne Shankel. The design team includes Anna Louizos, Natasha Katz and Peter Hylenski.
Producers Ken Davenport and Robyn Goodman are casting the roles of Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham. The project was conceived by Davenport and Marc Kessler.
While “Altar Boyz” readies for its Dodger Stages preem, the recently opened Off Broadway complex loses a tenant Nov. 28. “The Immigrant,” a new musical by Mark Harelik, Sarah Knapp and Steven M. Alper, will close there after 19 previews and 29 performances.
