Guild tuning up with ‘Year,’ ‘Party’

MTG also to take three shows to Cal State Long Beach

The Musical Theater Guild will present local premieres of two Tony-nominated tuners, “My Favorite Year” and “The Wild Party,” in its ninth season of semi-staged Broadway in Concert performances.

Also, MTG will take three of its shows to Cal State Long Beach’s Carpenter Performing Arts Center during its 2004-05 season of concert-staged readings of seldom-seen musicals. MTG is a resident company at Glendale’s Alex Theater and performs selected shows at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.

The first show of the season will be “My Favorite Year,” based on the hit movie, with book by Joseph Dougherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. Dates are Sept. 20 at the Alex and Oct. 3 at Thousand Oaks.

That’s followed by 1959’s Tony winner for best musical, Bob Fosse’s “Redhead.” A murder-mystery musical with book by David Shaw, Dorothy Fields, Herbert Fields and Sidney Sheldon, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields and music by Albert Hague, “Redhead” is set for Nov. 22 at the Alex and Nov. 29 at the Carpenter.

Next up is “Roberta,” with music by Jerome Kern, book and lyrics by Otto Harbach. The tale of a American football hero who inherits his aunt’s Paris dress shop, it features classics such as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “I Won’t Dance.” “Roberta” hits all three venues: Feb. 21 at the Alex, Feb. 27 in Thousand Oaks and March 7 in Long Beach.

“Sail Away,” the Noel Coward tuner that made a star of Elaine Stritch, also will cover the bases: April 11, 2005, at the Alex, April 24 in Thousand Oaks and April 25 at the Carpenter.

The season concludes with Michael John LaChiusa’s “The Wild Party” June 6 at the Alex. LaChiusa collaborated on the book with George C. Wolfe, based on a poem by Joseph Moncure March.
