Broadway talks end with accord

Marathon session concludes with agreement

NEW YORK — Stagehands, Broadway producers and theater owners reached an agreement early Tuesday morning on a new contract.

The marathon negotiations began Monday morning and did not conclude until 4:45 a.m. Tuesday.

A League of American Theaters & Producers statement reported the economic package was in most respects similar to the three-year pact reached in October with the Nederlander Organization, which owns nine Broadway theaters. The contract just agreed upon by the stagehands’ Local 1 of IATSE and the league would cover those theaters owned by Jujamcyn and the Shuberts.

The league’s contract with the Nederlanders, which was ratified by union membership over the weekend, calls for increases of 3.5% the first year, 3.5% the second year and 4% the third year. The increases in the Nederlander contract include a 3% wage increase in each of the three years, an additional pension contribution of 0.5% in the third year and yearly welfare increases of 0.5% a year for each contract year.

According to a league statement, its contract with the stagehands also achieves significant flexibility in two areas:

  • “Publicity and promotion in the theater, expanding opportunities for producers to market their shows”;

  • “Expanding the ability for producers to utilize automation/technology on Broadway, when productions begin out of town.”

The old contract expired Aug. 31.
