Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writing team behind New Line’s “Freddy vs. Jason,” have been tapped by Universal Pictures to rewrite “Spy Hunter,” a vidgame adaptation to star Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
Studio has high hopes for the pic, which is skedded to shoot in June in order for “Spy Hunter” to be ready as a 2005 summer tentpole.
Chuck Gordon and Adrian Askarieh are producing, with Neal Moritz and Marty Adelstein expected to come on board as well.
Per the vidgame, Pic will follow Johnson as a former fighter pilot who turns to doing battle in souped-up cars for a secret espionage service.
Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (“2 Fast 2 Furious”) penned the original concept for bringing the vidgame to the screen.
Swift and Shannon are also penning “Area 52” for producer Casey Silver. The sci-fi actioner follows an alien monster that wreaks havoc after escaping from a secret government base in Antarctica.
Overseeing “Spy Hunter” at Universal are production prexy Scott Stuber and veep Dylan Clark.
Scribe duo is repped by CAA and attorney Jeff Frankel.
