BANGKOK — The release of Chinese helmer Wong Kar Wai’s “2046” has been delayed in Thailand due to a battle over a brief shot of Thai singer/actor Thongchai McIntyre.
Local distrib 20th Century Fox was forced to pull the pic from its skedded Nov. 11 launch after objections from GMM Grammy, the country’s biggest record company, whose stable includes McIntyre.
GMM accused the producers of seeking to benefit from McIntyre’s brief appearance without permission. An exec at GMM Grammy says it’s negotiating with the producers to try to find a solution, but if that proves difficult it will take legal action.
Wong filmed a scene with McIntyre in Thailand in 2000, but there was no further contact with the thesp or GMM when the director completed the pic in Hong Kong. A spokeswoman for Fox said “2046” will be released when the dispute has been settled. She added Fox didn’t know whether GMM had signed an agreement with the producers for McIntyre to appear in the pic and did not intend to cash in on McIntyre’s name.
“Fans want to see Wong’s film, not (watch) McIntyre,” she said.
