Sands ankles Roadshow

Industry vet headed antipiracy org for past year

SYDNEY — Veteran distrib Ian Sands is stepping down Monday after 31 years with Australia’s Village Roadshow to pursue personal interests — starting with a break from the daily grind.

He has been general manager of special projects at Village Roadshow, heading antipiracy org the Australian Film Industry Coalition, for the past year.

Before that he ran distrib arm Roadshow Films, initially as managing director, then as chairman. He worked closely with the banner’s suppliers, including Warner Bros. and New Line.

“I am proud of what Village Roadshow stands for and my contribution to its development, presence and strength in the world entertainment scene,” he said Tuesday in an email to industry friends and colleagues.

Sands has not flagged his next career move, but it’s likely to be in the film industry. “I love the excitement of the ever-changing nature of our business and the sense of community and fellowship throughout the industry,” he said.
