Immigant pic is ‘Heaven’ to buyers

World Brief

“Gate to Heaven,” a German comedy about two immigrants who fall in love in Frankfurt, may not have been hit at home, but it’s dazzling foreign buyers.

Japanese distrib Alcine Terran picked up director Veit Helmer’s pic from distrib Bavaria Film Intl. after releasing the helmer’s last film, “Tuvalu,” in 2001.

“Gate to Heaven” made only $40,000 at the German box office after its release in December, but the love story of Alexei from Russia and Nisha from India has proved a hot seller. It also was picked up by Orlando Films in Israel, Videovision Entertainment in South Africa, A Film for the Benelux and Triangelfilm in Scandinavia.

Pic was shot in English from a script by Gordan Mihic (“Black Cat, White Cat”) and stars Indian actress Masumi Makhija and Russian thesp Valery Nikolaev.
