RIO DE JANEIRO — Helmer Hector Babenco’s HB Filmes will produce a spinoff of his box office hit, prison drama “Carandiru,” for Brazil’s No. 1 net TV Globo.
Globo plans to air the 10-episode skein of “Carandiru: Other Stories” in the second half of 2005.
Released by Columbia TriStar in Brazil in 2003, pic scored the country’s highest B.O. in the past 14 years, luring 4.6 million admissions. Prison drama is based on the bestselling book of Dr. Drauzio Varella.
Fabiano Gullane, producer of the pic and series, said Babenco will start lensing in January in Sao Bernardo do Campo, where the pic was shot.
Babenco will direct some episodes and oversee direction of others. Some members of the original cast will reprise their roles including Rodrigo Santoro, Milton Goncalves and Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos.
“Each episode of the series will focus on a different character of the film,” Gullane said.
HB and Globo have signed a three-year contract. In 2006 and 2007, HB will produce programming for Globo.
The agreement is similar to the one Globo has with Fernando Meirelles’ 02 Filmes, which annually produces a skein based on “City of God.”
Sony Pictures Classics released “Carandiru” in the U.S. this year.
