Exhibitors end strike over tax

Bollywood back on track

More than 1,000 owners of single-screen cinemas in India’s western Maharashtra state, Bollywood’s home state, ended an 18-day strike Tuesday after the local government agreed to cut entertainment taxes.

The exhibitors claimed the authorities reneged on a deal to reduce a 55% tax — the highest in the country — by 10%.

The strike led to producers delaying the releases of Bollywood movies, already reeling from low audiences due to the India-Pakistan cricket series. Producers are preferring to wait until mid-April to screen their latest products.
