MADRID — Alvaro Zapata has been appointed executive prexy of Spanish publishing and media giant DeAPlaneta, replacing Giorgio Sbampato.
DeAPlaneta was launched in 2000 as a joint venture between Spain’s Planeta Group and Italy’s DeAgostini Group.
It holds a controlling 33.5% stake in Spanish commercial broadcaster Antena 3 and has a film and TV production interests in DeAPlaneta P.C., and Prodigius Audiovisual, and distribution arm DeAPlaneta Distribucion for Spain and Portugal.
The large question is whether, under Zapata’s leadership, DeAPlaneta’s production and distribution arms can finally take off, establishing it as one of Spain’s most powerful integrated film and TV forces.

Distribbed by BVI Spain, “Football Days,” “Carmen,” “La Fiesta” and “Fourth Floor” grossed a total $26.8 million last year in Spain.
DeAPlaneta aims to distrib big-budget film fare, taking all rights to the Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow-starrer “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.”
