D-film project sets ‘Flyer’

Helmer Fox trained at National Film School

JOHANNESBURG — The South African DV8 digital film production project has announced that its third film will be “The Flyer,” written and directed by feature newcomer Revel Fox.

“The Flyer” tells the story of Kier, a mixed race streetchild from Cape Town who robs Anders, a wise old master ex-trapeze flyer. Anders catches him and makes him repay his debt.

“The Flyer” will be the debut feature of Fox, who returned to South Africa after a stint at the National Film School in the U.K. and has since done television work and several short films. Helmer also trained under renowned South African trapeze artist Keith Anderson.

Pic is shooting for five weeks in and around Cape Town, and will be completed in September 2004.

Launched by Jeremy Nathan and Joel Phiri in 2002, the Dv8 project aims to boost the industry by creating a flow of quality homegrown features produced in South Africa.

Exhibitor/ distributor Ster-Kinekor, broadcaster SABC2, financier Rand Merchant Bank and filmmakers have joined forces to ensure that 12 local films are developed, produced and marketed by end-2005.
