Court: No need to stand on ceremony

World Brief

It’s official — Indians don’t have to stand during the national anthem in Karan Johar’s 2001 pic “Kabhi khushi kabhie gham.”

The Supreme Court in New Delhi this week ruled there was no need for audiences to stand if the national anthem is played or sung as part of a movie, documentary or newsreel.

Helmer Johar had appealed against an order by the High Court in Madhya Pradesh state ordering the anthem to be cut or the film withdrawn from public screenings.

Johar and “K3G” producer Yash Johar had argued that since the national anthem was part of the movie, the audience did not have to stand up.
